Mornington Peninsula

What are the departure times for the car ferry linking Mornington Peninsula to the start of the Great Ocean Road? Do I need to book ahead? How long is the journey?

The car ferry leaves every hour from 7 am until 6 pm, 7 days a week. The journey across Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay takes 35-40 minutes. Advance bookings for cars are not necessary but it is important to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 15 minutes prior to departure. For coaches, it is wise to book ahead. When is strawberry and cherry u-pick season on the Mornington Peninsula?

Cherries are in season from late November until mid to late January each year. The strawberry season begins on 1st November and ends on the 30th April. However, outside picking season, visitors can still enjoy a 'strawberry' experience at Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm Cafe with tastings of fruit ciders, wines, jams and strawberry desserts.

When can I swim with dolphins and seals on the Mornington Peninsula

The dolphin and swim season starts in late September and ends on 30 April each year.

What time do the penguins arrive?

Penguins arrive at sunset every day of the year. In winter it can be as early as 5pm and in summer as late as 9pm.

Where can I see penguins?

The penguins can be seen at the Penguin Parade, 1019 Ventnor Rd, Summerland, Victoria 3922.

What time does the Penguin Parade open?

We suggest you arrive one hour before the penguins to give yourself a chance to have a look at the interactive displays in the visitor centre and then make your way to your seats at the beach.

Do I need to book tickets?

Get in early! During December, January, Easter and long-weekends it is essential to pre-book your tickets to the Penguin Parade to avoid missing out.

Bookings are essential all year round for our ranger guided tours and Penguins Plus.

How far is Phillip Island from Melbourne?

The island is just a 90 minute drive from Melbourne, with a bridge connecting the island to the mainland at San Remo

How do we get to Phillip Island?

From Melbourne by car:

Take the Monash Freeway (M1) to the Cranbourne exit, where you will turn into the South Gippsland Highway (M420). Follow this route to the Bass Highway (A420), through Grantville and Bass. Turn right at Anderson roundabout onto the Phillip Island Road (B420) to San Remo, over the bridge onto Phillip Island.

Phillip Island has an amazing variety of eateries from take-away outlets to cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs and fine dining. They are scattered about the island with some overlooking Western Port Bay, some in the Cowes Township and others in nearby sea side villages.
