Come on, dive in! With peaceful bay beaches, rolling surf and the Yarra River, this is a glorious region for refreshing swims.
On the Mornington Peninsula, a string of coastal villages along Port Phillip Bay provide beautiful beaches, some with the Peninsula’s famous bathing boxes. You’ll find beaches all the way from Frankston (a great family spot) to Portsea (known for its style and famous hotel).
Western Port Bay beaches, such as Shoreham, Merricks and Balnarring, are generally less crowded. The Bass Strait ‘back beaches’ including Sorrento, Portsea and Gunnamatta, can have excellent surf, but take care on this wild coastline.
Swim north, surf south
As its northern beaches have some protection from the Western Port coastline, Phillip Island has idyllic swimming spots. The local saying is ‘north for swimming, south for surf’, with sheltered swimming at beaches including Cowes, Silverleaves and Newhaven around on the eastern shore.
Families can enjoy beach hire during peak season, including aqua bikes, canoes and beach gear at Erehwon Point and at the Anderson Road boat ramp. Surf beaches Woolamai and Smiths Beach are both patrolled in summer, so swim between the flags.
In the Yarra Valley, the Yarra River is crystal clear and cool. The best place to slip in for a dip is at Warburton. There’s also an exciting water play park in Seville where kids can create their own water fantasies.
