Surf’s up! Experienced surfers can bring their own boards and head for the great breaks on Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula. If you’ve long dreamed of learning, professional surfing schools at both destinations will supply all equipment, including wetsuits.
Phillip Island is renowned as one of the most consistent and varied surf locations in Australia. The swell is rarely too small to surf and depending on the swell size you can usually find a sheltered break in any wind.
Smiths Beach, Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay are all top spots. These beautiful curved bays offer some great breaks when the conditions are right (check at local surf shops for the latest information). Island Surf School is based at Smiths Beach, with lessons available and all equipment for hire.
Exposed to the rolling breakers of Bass Strait, the Peninsula’s ocean or ‘back beaches’ provide everything from the gentler waters of Sorrento to the sometimes fierce waves off Gunnamatta.
For consistent breaks try Portsea and Sorrento near the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, and the ocean beaches at Point Leo and Flinders on the Western Port Bay coast.
East Coast Surf School provides qualified instructors and all equipment at Point Leo, and other beaches depending on conditions, while Bay Play Tours operates at Shoreham, Point Leo, Portsea and Gunnamatta. For something different, learn to surf with Peninsula Stand Up Paddle!
