Equestrian and horseracing
Country racing: it’s a great day out, with a relaxed ambience and excellent services but minus the crush of major city race days. Mornington Race Course on the Mornington Peninsula is one of Victoria’s most picturesque regional courses. In the Yarra Valley, Yarra Glen is a beautiful country course with bush-covered hills as a backdrop. Both have first class facilities.
Also in the Yarra Valley is the very family-friendly Healesville Amateur Racing Club, with popular picnic races. Activities such as pony rides and running races are often organised for kids. Just 15 minutes’ drive from Phillip Island, Woolamai Racing Club holds traditional picnic races from December to March.
Spend a family day outdoors, with an easy ride through the bush or along beaches. A number of trail ride operators take complete beginners (see Horseriding), but if you’d like to learn the correct techniques from expert equestrians, there are two equestrian centres in our region.
In the Yarra Valley, Lysterfield Equestrian Centre caters for beginners and experienced riders on its 64-acre property. On the Mornington Peninsula, Arthurs Seat Trail Rides has an indoor equestrian centre, Kanumera, where you can learn to ride on well-schooled horses.
