The Yarra Valley is a premier wine and food region, with countless experiences for connoisseurs as well as those on their first food and wine trip. There are more than 120 wineries with sensational cellar doors, superb restaurants serving fresh regional produce and farm gates where you can fill your picnic basket with just-picked and artisan goodies.
Yarra Valley wineries have won many tourism and wine awards: excellent starting points are Domaine Chandon (Moet and Chandon’s Australian winery), De Bortoli Estate (established more than 25 years ago and offering superb wines with Italian cuisine) and Rochford Winery (one of the Yarra Valley’s busiest vineyards, with a restaurant, cafe and patio, cellar door, retail shop, wine club, art gallery and natural amphitheatre for outdoor events).
The region is also known for its outstanding accommodation, with charming B&Bs, intimate cottages, 5-star hideaways and funky retreats. Chateau Yering Historic House Hotel (with Eleonore’s Restaurant holding a Chef’s Hat from The Age Good Food Guide) and the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley are amongst the most luxurious, while the 4.5 star Yering Gorge Cottages offer a relaxing ambience right on the peaceful Yarra River.
Local tour operators provide very high quality services, with Global Ballooning recognised internationally for its memorable trips over vineyards, villages and farmlands. There’s also a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, day spas, forest walks, country racing and lots of markets and galleries, including the farmers’ market at Yering Station.
