Sassafras is a charming village which retains its 19th century traditions, particularly that of taking tea. Tea drinkers can drop into a number of popular tearooms which serve Devonshire tea, then browse the specialist tea shops which sell hundreds of varieties and flavours. Favourites are Miss Marples tearooms, housed in an authentic English cottage inspired by Agatha Christie, and the specialist Tea Leaves shop. Lunch and dinner can be enjoyed at a number of restaurants and cafes.
Take a walk through the village, browsing in the antique stores, art and craft shops and food and wine outlets such as Ripe or Sassafras General Store and Café.
Sooth the soul with a little time in the forest, and immerse yourself in the beauty of famed gardens such George Tindale Memorial Gardens with fascinating exotic plants, or by the water features in the historic Alfred Nicholas Garden.
Then back to Sassafras for the evening, where elegant period guesthouses continue the 19th century ambience. There’s contemporary boutique accommodation too.
