Tucked away in the lush surrounds of Sherbrooke Forest, Belgrave has been made famous by the much-loved 100-year-old train Puffing Billy, which chuffs to Gembrook and back. This peaceful village has become a drawcard for people who want to live close to the earth, and there’s a very diverse range of wholefood, natural healing, fair trade shops, second-hand bookshops and absorbing galleries like Belgrave Art Stockade.
Belgrave also has enjoyable urban pastimes, such as a summertime movie under the stars and high-profile bands on stage at Ruby's Lounge. And if you enjoy the positively quirky, visit Horatio's Amazing Home, a 1917 cottage made of flattened kerosene tins fixed to a eucalyptus tree frame.
There are also many relaxing walks through the tranquil forest of towering mountain ash and rich green fern gullies. Picnics are a favourite pastime at the Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground, One Tree Hill and in Sherbrooke Forest, and accommodation including cosy B&Bs and luxurious cottages is dotted around this area.
If you’d like to up the action, Trees Adventure is an unforgettable zip-trek and tree-top obstacle course through the forest, with giant flying foxes and a dizzying array of 65 aerial challenges. There are green courses for beginners through to the advanced black diamond course.
